Announcement for Goo Nakayama's Solo Exhibition starting Thursday, December 5th.
This is the third exhibition at IAF SHOP*, featuring new works from the artist's recent SPOIL series. Compared to previous works in the series, these new pieces have been stripped down to their essential elements, presenting more minimal and simple compositions with heightened tension. The artist will be present at the gallery on December 5th, 14th, and 15th. Additionally, there will be a separate musical event on December 7th, if you would like to see the works with silence, please come the other day. We warmly invite you to attend.
Artists Statement
Goo-moji - these are arbitrary characters that no one else knows.
They're like something that fell away somewhere along the connecting line between myself and the world. Like a suicide note or a letter.
This will be my ninth solo exhibition. I've always favored themes around inferiority complexes and negative words, and this time too, I've chosen a negative word for the exhibition title.
SPOIL means to ruin, to wreck, to devalue, to become ruined through overindulgence, to decay, to spoil - all negative words.
Yet somehow these words feel comfortable to me.
Whether it's because I was overprotected by my mother or due to a developmental disorder, I feel my mental development was about 10 years behind others. I've made many regrettable mistakes - saying things I shouldn't have, causing trouble for others. Now that I've lived for 49 years, I like to think my brain has caught up to the average person's level, but growing up that way, I was bullied at school and often felt depressed, wondering if I was just socially incompatible.
Perhaps because of this past, I find myself strangely drawn to weakened things, defective things, imperfect things.
Maybe I see myself reflected in them.
In this exhibition themed "SPOIL," I will display works that are like letters I want to share.
I'm honored to hold my exhibition at IAF SHOP*, which has that underground atmosphere I love so much.
I intend to quietly unfold my LOFI and imperfect aesthetics here.
