Sesame, a major crop in the Middle East, is said to have inspired this phrase as its pods burst open when ripe, or it could stem from beliefs in the mystical powers of sesame. Another theory suggests it's a metaphor for the hidden female genitalia...etc. Coupled with the fascination for the mystique shrouded Middle East, it sounds like a spell that opens doors to unknown realms, leading to new values and worlds.

In these chaotic times, one might wish to recite it before the new inner doors... "Open Sesame!"
